Wallaby traps (Bryan Siebel)

Southern Boobook (Bryan Siebel)
Avocet is a commercial cattle property located just north of the magnificent Carnarvon Ranges. Just under 5000 hectares in size, an astounding 1200 hectares of this property along with all its precious inhabitants has been designated a nature reserve by the landholder. This designation is officially recognised by the State government and consequently Flashjack wallabies have been released here over a period of 6 years.
Flashjack wallabies and numerous other animal species can be seen at night with the help of powerful spotlights. Southern Boobook owls alight on dead branches and glower at the vehicles as they pass, Eastern Grey kangaroos stand alert on the open grasslands at the sound of the diesel engines and every so often a small, beautifully marked wallaby will be caught peering out from the undergrowth…. Every native plant and animal is a natural part of the Flashjacks’ habitat and by managing the wallaby in-situ the entire surrounding ecosystem is also managed.
Avocet Nature Reserve is adjoined by three main properties. Two of those, both commercial agricultural properties, have been highly supportive of the conservation efforts by allowing feral animal control on their land. This helps to reduce the number of feral predators entering the reserve. The Trust is hopeful that the third property will join the collective effort.
